Do you know the origin of storage rooms?
Here we leave you a very interesting article about the origin of storage rooms prepared by the Spanish Association of Sef Storage (Spanish Association of storage rooms or self-storage).
Like many of the traditions and elements of our day, storage rooms come from ancient Greece. According to the findings of the time, the Greeks already cared about organizing and ordering all their belongings, but not in storage rooms.
They called them “opisthodomos” which literally means “back home”. Specifically: őπισθεν (opistho = behind) and δόμος (domos = house).
They were chambers that were located at the back of the temples and were used to store relics, objects of worship and offerings, what we would call storage rooms. These types of rooms were only found in the largest temples, such as the Parthenon.
They were accessed only from behind the temples, they had no direct communication with the main room. The type of objects that were stored in them meant that a small number of people had access, security was very important. On specific dates, the pieces were taken out of the storage room to be displayed in the temple, so everyone could contemplate the riches stored in the storage room.
Over time, this custom was adopted by citizens with greater economic power, they kept their wealth in these storage rooms and from time to time displayed them in their gardens or rooms of their home. In ancient Rome, the opisthodomos came to be called posticum (storage rooms) and was no longer applied only to temples, it designated the back room of any individual's house: posticum.
